What to Expect
In most cultures important social, religious, magical and psychological roles are played by wordless speech, in the form of prayers, games, spells, animal calls, and other forms that hover on the borderland between poetry, music, trance, and childhood play. In the West however, these practices have been suppressed for centuries until re-created by the literary avant-garde as "Sound Poetry".
Come experience the elemental undercurrent that infuses poetryonce we remove or relativize meaning, imagery, and metaphor to concentrate on the most basic materials of language: sound, pattern, and breath. The Apocalypse Crunchmen have been performing, writing, and researching sound poetry as individuals and as part of the Post-NeoAbsurdist network for over fifteen years, long before they gradually converged on Roanoke, VA where they are involved with Art Rat Studios and the (soon to return) AfterMAF performance festival.
They will perform several historical examples of sound poetry from 1830 onward, talk a bit about its history and technique, and present an array of contemporary pieces, many of them weaving multiple voices together into an orchestrated chaos of language.
