The Basics

Aug 13, 2022, 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

The CCC, Asheville, NC, USA

What to Expect

This first workshop session is an introduction and exploration into the Michael Chekhov method.

What to Expect:

The classes are one and a half hours. Individuals can bring a lunch and stay after for discussion and collaboration. We begin with a warm-up and atmospheric work. Then we move to group gesture work and individual gesture work. There is time for writing or drawing or expression. We discuss the concept of the archetype and end with a grounding exercise.

Originally developed as a movement theater technique, Noreen Sullivan has adapted the Michael Chekhov method to be inclusive for all artists and creatives seeking to expand their craft through modes of embodiment. Each workshop is designed so that students can bring writing supplies, drawing supplies, or anything else to express themselves. We will study each gesture and how they live in the body. Through creating a safe space we will explore our memories and create together and separately.

Noreen Sullivan is a writer-director, poet, painter, and performer. She studied both the Vakhtangov technique and the Checkov technique with Sasha Tedeev of the Moscow Art Theatre at the Phonenix theater in San Francisco. She has written and directed for television and advertising. She enjoys working with actors and performers. However, she believes that accessing emotions and expression is valuable to all artists. She has developed this workshop series to address all styles and mediums.

Payment for each session is on a sliding scale of $10 - $40 (lowest payment option offered for students and low income). We accept cash, Venmo and Paypal.
